Taylor Swift announces "Midnights"

The Announcement

Today I woke up to the news that, at last night’s 2022 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, Taylor Swift announced her tenth studio album – Midnights. Taylor has been my favourite artist for years now, so it is needless to say that this announcement is quite exciting!

This would be Taylor’s seventh new album for the past five years and her fifth for the past three years! Just as a reminder, Taylor released “folklore” — which got a Grammy for Album of the Year – as well as “evermore” in 2020. These were then followed by the first re-recordings — “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” and “Red (Taylor’s Version)”.

MTV VMAs 2022

Taylor made a surprise appearance at the 2022’s MTV VMAs. Taylor won the awards for “Video”, “Direction”, and “Long Form Video” all for the video of “All Too Well: The Short Film” which premiered in November last year, alongside the release of “Red (Taylor’s Version)”.

Taylor is the only artist to win Video of the Year three times, following the award for “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019 and “Bad Blood” in 2015. The short film “All Too Well” is also the longest video ever to win in this category.

Midnights

Back on the album announcement, it is really interesting to think about which way would Taylor go sonically with this record. I would say she is the only artist that has experimented with so many genres, being overly successful in all of them (as an example — Taylor has won Grammys for Album of the Year three times, each one for an album in a different genre). I have never been a huge country or alternative music fan, but I have been in love with “Fearless”, “Red” and “folklore”.

The fandom has been questioning two things — whether Taylor will release all of the re-recorded albums, before any new music, and what style would she serve for #TS10. We now know the answer to the first question. However, the second one is still a mystery. I follow music forums and I like to see what fans think about that. If I had to say what I hope it would be — I would not be able to. Despite “folklore” being my favourite, I did not enjoy “evermore” which sounds very similar. On the other hand, I was quite surprised when I got into “folklore” that much, as I prefer pop music. In that sense, it is impossible to tell what I would like. Whatever genre it is, I just hope to enjoy the music!

Taylor’s overall sound has lately been a bit more stripped down, so I am not expecting anything like the bops we got in “1989” (which is still my favourite album of all times). At this point, I am a little bit tired of the alternative sound of her last two albums, so I am hoping that there will be a change in the direction even if slightly.

Autumn

Finally, I usually associate autumn with Taylor. While back home, in Bulgaria, I have always loved autumn (not as much when I am in the UK)! Late night walks in the park, while snow is falling, holding a cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte or Toffee Nut Latte and listening to Taylor’s music. There has always been something charming in this time of the year that I can feel. It always brings back very positive memories and helps me find harmony with myself and the world around me. I am sure that the fellow Swifties feel the same way, especially after I saw last year how much “All Too Well” means to them! Some of Taylor’s best albums — such as 1989 — were released in autumn too.

Pre-order now

You can pre-order “Midnights” now. I look forward to the release and cannot wait to write my quick review once the album is out. I am hoping that a lead single will be released before the album so as to get a glimpse of what to expect.
